by Patricia Skinner

Protecting Your Ideas

If you have an idea you'd like to protect, the first thing you need to do is make sure no one had the same idea before you did. You might think about hiring a lawyer, but this will be expensive, and it's sometimes a risky business. Especially if it turns out that your idea is not new after all. You'll have wasted all that money.

At some stage in the proceedings, you'll need to show your idea to someone. Why not a business patent attorney? He'll be able to draw up a report for you on similar patents. This will not only give you the advantage of knowing what's already out there, it will give you a good idea of the potential patent worth, should you decide to go ahead and register your idea.

So when it comes to determining patent worth, don't make the mistake of leaving it to amateurs. You need to enlist the services of professionals who are familiar with the procedure and who won't be leaving you with egg on your face.
