Career Management

by Patricia Cagle

Career management is essential to achieving a long and successful residence in the workplace. Setting goals, enjoying rewards and maintaining discipline are key in career achievement. Individuals who take the time to carefully manage both their day-to-day as well as long-term career goals are far more likely to enjoy professional success.

Career management and time management go hand in hand. An individual who is able to effectively divide his time at work is far more likely to enjoy increased productivity both in the office and at home. While it might take some discipline and dedication, any effort put toward career management is extremely beneficial. Keeping a routine calendar is very helpful in this regard. Even something as simple as a list of daily tasks can keep you on track and in sync.

Setting goals is another essential step in effective career management. This is true on both large and small scales. Setting your goals for the top of the mountain (while commendable) isn't necessarily effective unless you map out a game plan to conquer that mountain ahead of time. Thus, establishing weekly goals is an effective way to both manage your time and mark your progress.

Another important factor in effective career management is refusing to bite off more than you can chew. While it is certainly admirable to try and conquer the mountain all at once, it isn't always the wisest choice. Pacing oneself is almost always the better option. The quality of work tends to be better and you don't run the risk of career burn-out.
