Career Advice

by Patricia Cagle

Starting a new career is tough business (no pun intended). Whether you are new to the workforce or are switching professions after several years of experience, career planning is hard work. Fortunately, the process doesn't have to be excruciating. With the help of a career counselor, starting fresh and/or making the switch can be more exciting than frightening.

Career advice is best when it is offered from an impartial source. While your family and friends probably mean well, their career advice isn't necessarily the best. That is why the help of a career counselor is truly beneficial. Vocational counselors are trained and experienced in helping others in their quest for the perfect profession. Without emotions getting in the way, they are able to offer precise advice.

If you need some solid career advice, you would be wise to consult a counselor. Bear in mind, however, that while vocational counselors are helpful . . . they are not mind readers. The more information you can bring to the table in terms of your personal interests, skills, professional experience, etc., the better your counselor will be able to help.

Then again, perhaps you have no clue as to what field you'd like to pursue. No problem. A professional counselor should be able to administer a career test. Career tests are designed specifically to help individuals identify their vocational skills and weaknesses. With results in hand, your counselor will be able to pinpoint the best career options for you, and then offer advice on the best way to get started.
