Content Provider

by Taylor Grant

Content providers are individuals or establishments that create, own, or have the right to license or syndicate content for delivery to end users. The job of a provider is to supply quality content that drives traffic to your site and meets the specific needs of your site's users. Content providers can be freelance authors, who work on a pay-per-word structure, full-time staffed writers, or niche companies/content aggregators which collate information on specific topics.

Before hiring a content provider, you should make sure to define your goals. For instance, is your goal to increase retail sales, inform subscribers, or drive targeted traffic? A good content provider will work with you to develop copy that appeals to your specific audience, help you secure a high ranking in the top search engines, update the website on a continual basis, and provide unique, unduplicated content that will give you an edge over the competition.

There are a few important things you should do before hiring content providers. First and foremost, check their portfolio to see how they've helped other websites. Make sure to request and check references, and spend the extra time learning about copyright law. Also it's a good idea to research the competition so that you're only paying fair market value.

Besides straight copy, you'll also find content providers that supply text for reports, speeches, newsletters, journal articles, product descriptions, brochures, and even provide photography, printing services and a myriad of graphic arts. However, whatever the content format, the same rules apply. It should draw users to your website, supply relevant, useful information, and it should be updated often to maintain your user's interest.

There is a lot to be said for doing your homework and making sure that you're dealing with a reputable company, especially with the recent glut of content provider services. That way you'll have a clear understanding of what the content provider can and will do for your bottom line.
