DUI Lawyers

Criminal Defense Attorney

by Brian Thompson

If you have been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, then it is probably in your best interest to hire an attorney to represent you in court. Believe it or not, even a single DUI conviction can be extremely damaging to your record. For instance, a bad driving record can cause you to lose your job because companies do not want people who drink and drive to operate heavy equipment or drive company vehicles.

When you go to hire a defense attorney to represent you, you need to do a little homework. Especially if this is a first offense, you are probably going to be scared and upset, but don't let these emotions get in the way of hiring someone to help you in court. You should find an attorney who has experience dealing with drunk driving offenses. After all, just because a person is a lawyer, it doesn't mean that he or she is skilled in all areas of the law.

Secondly, you want to find out about the background of the person you are hiring. Sometimes even attorneys can have a checkered past. You want to make sure that he or she is licensed in your state to practice law, and check to see if the attorney in question has been reprimanded by your state's Bar Association for unethical behavior.

Finally, the most important step in choosing your attorney is to be honest. Tell him or her what happened, and give specific information. Your attorney cannot help to make the punishment smaller or go away all together if he or she does not thoroughly understand your specific case.
