Driver Education

by Kathleen Gagne

There is a lot of debate about the efficacy of driver education courses in the United States. Most teenagers learn the basics of driving through courses provided in their high schools. This experience is often viewed by participants as a rite of passage and an opportunity to have a lot of fun. Their goal probably is not focusing on learning how to be safe on the road.

Some families are turning to online driver education resources. The Internet is a great place to learn, and most of these courses are designed to allow the learner to move at his or her own pace. They can be interactive, colorful, and fun while, at the same time, offering an effective way to learn more than just the basics. They can even be used as a precursor to a live course in high school and will allow the student driver to enter that program with a higher level of knowledge and confidence.

Complaints About Driver Education

Teenagers continue to be the worst drivers on the road. One argument claims that student drivers need to get significantly more time driving in traffic with an adult present in the passenger seat before they are able to get a learner's permit. Some states, in fact, restrict drivers under a certain age from driving alone or from driving certain types of vehicles.

The simple truth is that many younger drivers need both extensive individualized instruction, such as they can get online, as well as much more experience driving in all types of road conditions. Providing beginning drivers of all ages with a more rounded base of general information and significantly more driving time with an adult present can make a difference to the safety of all the drivers on the road.
