Vehicle Codes

by Kathleen Gagne

Every state has a motor vehicle code that is created by the enactment of laws. Generally, the laws are enforced by both state and local police agencies, and the most common method of enforcement is the giving of tickets to violators. In some states, motor vehicle codes include annual inspections. If drivers do not get their cars inspected and, if needed, repaired, they may be served with fines or more.

Motor vehicle codes cover the issuance of drivers licenses and vehicle registration tags. In addition, vehicle codes determine the minimum acceptable level of vehicle insurance and the types of vehicles that require such insurance. Vehicle codes define the types of vehicles that can be driven on state roads.

Understand the Basics

For most residents, the basic elements of state vehicle codes that should be understood are those related to traffic safety. For example, the signs on all streets proclaiming the highest acceptable rate of speed on the street are the product of the motor vehicle code. Signs that control traffic and parking are also developed as part of the state's vehicle codes.

Other than cars, vehicle codes cover the use of bicycles, all-terrain vehicles, RVs, and motorcycles. City buses and other pay-transportation, such as taxis, are also under the vehicle codes umbrella. In short, if you are driving or riding on almost any type of vehicle, there are probably sections of your state's motor vehicle codes relating to what you are doing, where you are going, and how fast you can get there. If you need specific information about a segment of your state's motor vehicle codes, you should be able to access the documents through your state's website.
