Michigan Lakefront Property

by Grace Moore

Michigan is the state of "great lakes." Even the license plates in Michigan read, "Great Lakes Splendor." Four of the five North American Great Lakes touch Michigan and are a part of its geography. It is no wonder then that Michigan is home to an abundance of lakefront property. Besides the sizable Great Lakes, there are hundreds of smaller lakes in Michigan where an interested party can buy or rent lakefront property. There are even opportunities to buy your own private lake and property, for a large sum.

The unique thing about Michigan lakefront property is the abundance of it. There are thousands of properties and hundreds of lakes to choose from. Having a lot of choice means that you can find a property specifically tailored to your needs.

Do you want to rent or buy? Property can be an excellent money maker, and waterfront property in particular can be a very wise investment. However, if you are not looking to invest, but just want to vacation for a season, Michigan lakefront property might also be appropriate for you.

Once you have decided whether you want to rent or buy, there are other things to consider. What kind of weather are you looking for? Are you looking for a place to bask in the summer sun and play water sports, or a cozy cabin in which to curl up next to the fire during chilly winter months? Michigan can be enjoyed in every season; they have white winters, colorful changing leaves in autumn, flower filled springs, and hot summers. If you want to snowmobile in the winter and go fishing in the summer, you might want to look for a property that offers access to both.

Price Expectations

Whether you are looking to rent or to buy, you can expect to find a wide range of pricing options available, depending upon both the size of the property and its location. For example, property at Torch Lake in Eastport, Michigan--an excellent trout fishing location with a golf course nearby--can vary a great deal. A one bedroom cottage, walking distance from the beach, can run about $800 per week in this area. If you are looking to rent something grander, however, it might be as much as $3500 per week. If you are looking to buy a family home, a four-bedroom house with panoramic views of Torch Lake will start at around $1,000,000.

If you are looking for property, but would like to build your own home, there are lots available on Lake Superior that include black sand beaches. A three acre lot will cost around $200,000. If building a house or spending $1,000,000 on one already built sounds far too extravagant for your bank account, then purchasing a condominium or cabin may well be cheaper. There are three bedroom condominiums available on Mona Lake (which is accessible to the much larger Lake Michigan by boat) for around $180,000.

Lakefront property in Michigan is plentiful enough that you can find something to match nearly any personal taste. In addition to questions about price, be sure to ask yourself what you would prefer in terms of the local community. Do you want to be in a small town area, or close to a big city? Would you prefer to be near a golf course or a ski resort? Will you want to go fishing, and if so, what type of fish would you like to catch? There are a large number of online real estate pages that can assist you in your search.
