Graphic Design Company

by Robert Mac

Graphic design companies do everything from creating the smallest logos to designing model sets for blockbuster movies, and many things in between. Having an "in" is a great way to get in the door at a particular company, but in this very competitive field, you have to be able to walk the walk, too. There are no guarantees, but a strong portfolio and a degree from a reputable institution are incredibly helpful.

Getting into the company of your choice, however, doesn't necessarily mean you'll get far. Most jobs for new hires are in entry-level positions and you'll have to pay your dues before moving up. . .or moving on. Knowing that the market is full of creative people striving for limited positions is crucial, because the industry can seem ruthless at times.

Design companies generally look to hire designers to fill a particular niche, while non-design companies will often hire one designer to handle many tasks. For instance, you could be hired by an accounting firm to design stationery, logos, websites and brochures. Your training and education, then, play a big role in the ultimate focus of your work, so make sure that your studies center around your interests.

Many graphic designers work outside the realm of companies altogether, and work independently as freelancers. While this eliminates office politics from your day-to-day work, it also eliminates a steady paycheck. Starting at the bottom level of a design firm may require years of monotonous work before rising to a more creative position, but it does offer job security and a chance to soak in the atmosphere of a graphic design shop.
