Graphic Design For Small Business

by Robert Mac

Since Internet commerce lets even the smallest business compete against larger corporations, the playing field, to some extent, has been leveled. However, each of these smaller companies has to look like they belong in the marketplace. A mom-and-pop shop can exist online, but they will need to create a professional look in order to play in the big leagues.

The sad truth of the matter is that the majority of small businesses fail: upwards of 95 percent close their doors for good within five years. One of the top reasons is competition, and a large consideration in choosing a company is appearance. Should I spend my money on Company A, with the homemade sign out front, or Company B, with the professionally designed brochures and great logo?

Creating professional-looking graphic designs is crucial for small businesses. Every aspect of a business is distilled to a graphic image online, so each website page, logo, newsletter, and catalog has to look the part. Every company is invited to be a player in the World Wide Web, but the stakes are higher and the costs of creating a look are, too.

While choosing a reputable design firm to create your company's artwork and design is very important, it can be expensive. There are alternatives, though. For instance, you can hire a freelance graphic design artist who can create everything from stationery to websites. Another option is to approach design students who may need to work on projects pro-bono or at low cost to complete their portfolios.
