Platinum Wedding Bands

by Grace Moore

Platinum wedding bands have become increasingly popular again in recent years. Platinum was originally in demand in the early 20th century, but during World War II, platinum was put on the strategic metals list. This made it impossible to use for jewelry design, and gold took its place. But now, styles are changing and many couples are looking back to platinum for their wedding bands.

Today, many young women are choosing platinum for their wedding bands because it matches their collections of silver jewelry. Some young men prefer platinum because they feel it's less intrusive than gold if they are not used to wearing jewelry. Platinum is also popular because it tends to emphasize the brilliance of a diamond, instead of dulling it.

Platinum is valued not only for its looks, but for its durability. It is a very strong metal that is not prone to chips, scratches, or wear. This can be reassuring for those whose ring settings hold a very expensive diamond or gem. Platinum is also relatively easy to clean. Often a toothbrush and soapy water is sufficient to bring back the gleam. Another bonus of buying platinum is the fact that it is not mixed with lesser metals in the process of being formed into jewelry, unlike gold, so if you suffer from jewelry-related sensitivities or allergies, platinum would be a good choice for you.

You can find a plain platinum wedding band for as cheap as $140. If you search online or visit discount jewelry stores, you might even be able to find one for less. As with most wedding bands, a woman's platinum band will be cheaper than a man's because it is smaller. Even though you can find inexpensive platinum bands, platinum will generally be more expensive than gold. It is rarer than gold and significantly harder. Overall, people who invest in platinum are usually happy with it. Platinum wedding bands are durable, classic, and affordable.
