Gold Wedding Bands

by Grace Moore

Gold has a warmth to its coloring that many associate with untarnished love and lasting marriage. Gold was the precious metal of choice for the wedding bands of the baby boomer generation. However, it will never go out of style. Gold is still a popular choice for couples today.

When buying a gold wedding band, there are some things to consider. When you buy a gold piece of jewelry, you do not want to buy 24 karat (100 percent) pure gold. Pure gold is much too soft. For a wedding band, you want 18 karat (75 percent) gold. 18 karat gold is durable and appropriate for everyday wear. Most people also think that 18 karat gold has a richer color than 14 karat (58.3 percent) gold.

You can find gold wedding bands for as little as $70 (14 karat). If you would prefer to have 18 karat gold, expect to pay around $120. If you have any sensitivities or allergies to non-precious metals, it is recommended that you choose 18 karat gold, which is mixed with fewer non-precious metals than 14 karat gold.

Some jewelry designers will recommend that if any stones or gems are secured to the ring, platinum prongs will be stronger and more secure than gold prongs. However, while gold is a softer metal, gold settings should keep your stones and gems safe. On the upside, gold won't rust or tarnish, so cleaning your bands should be simple. Gold wedding bands are tried and true symbols of matrimonial promise. If you and your partner choose gold, you will be able to appreciate its warmth and durability.
