Wall Dog Doors

by Shirley Parker

It stands to reason that the stronger the dog, the stronger the dog door will need to be. For large, powerful dogs, a dog door in the wall might be eminently more suitable than one in a door. But don't worry. While the models and installation can be a little expensive, they are worth it. These doors, like many of the in-door models, all come with security panels and deadbolts.

It is highly unlikely that a person will get in through the dog door, if the owner is alert and takes the proper precautions. If, for some reason, a determined human does try to gain entry that way, what will happen? Well, before he confronts the homeowner's family, he's going to be met by the castle centurions.

The reality is that anyone with the gall to get inside is going to meet up with your miffed Chow Chow (a formidable watchdog that needs consistent training), your dynamic Jack Russell Terrier, or your indignant German Shepherd (Alsatian). At the same time, if you have a Chihuahua, a Schipperke, or a Dachshund, the intruder will not stay long either. These smaller dogs are all heart and very protective of their families.

A Popular Wall Dog Door

Many in-door dog doors can be adapted with a short tunnel extension (usually an extra two inches) for installation in a wall. The wall opening will need to be framed, as extra framing does not usually come with the kit. It is best to have a professional install any dog door in a wall, or in a metal door. This is not to say the homeowner cannot do it, if he or she possesses the necessary tools and skill.

A popular dog door for wall installations is the heavy duty, Deluxe Motorized Electronic Door by Solo. Only pets wearing a collar, with the special sensor attached, can open the door from inside or out. However, the owner is still in control and can turn off the motor, when the pet must stay either inside or outdoors. The Solo comes in five sizes to accommodate many breeds.
