Magnetic Dog Doors

by Shirley Parker

Patio dog doors are aesthetically appealing and so much more attractive than just cutting a hole in the door or wall. While almost everyone's budget is constrained in today's economy, nice dog doors are not necessarily expensive. It depends on exactly what is needed.

An individual who is handy with tools can probably do the installation on most dog doors without hiring a professional. Manufacturers often provide installation manuals online, for a preview of what you need to know. However, it can be reassuring to hire someone who does installations all the time. There are regional specialists, with offices in several states, who will send someone out to your home to install a dog door for a reasonable fee.

Some classic design dog doors, which come in various sizes, work off "doggie power" and are insulated to reduce any loss of heat or coolness in winter or summer. Their locking security panels are strong, with the larger ones often being made of steel. With locking pins or deadbolts in place, the covers cannot be removed from the outside of the installation.

Extra-strong magnets hold the door flap tightly in place, creating a weather seal that won't let rain or drafts into the house. This also prevents unnecessary noise when the door is not being used. The magnets used are generally ceramic to prevent rusting.

Electromagnetic Dog Doors

One of the most popular automatic doors is electromagnetic. The tag on the dog's collar sends out a magnetic field to open the door. In this case, the tag is referred to as a magnetic key. There are door sizes available for small pets, as well as larger ones. It is one of the few pet doors that can be installed in metal doors. However, certain appliances can cause the door to open and shut without the dog's magnetic key being near. This usually happens when the electromagnetic door is installed in a laundry room, for example. Moving metal causes this to happen. In most cases, the sensitivity on the door can be turned down, or the unit can be turned off while you are doing the laundry.
