Fort Worth Zoo

by Michelle Baugh

Considered the number one attraction in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, the Fort Worth Zoo currently houses more than 1,200 animals from around the world. The many exhibits, with names like World of Primates, Asian Falls, and Koala Outback, have helped rank the zoo among the top 50 overall top-rated attractions in the United States. On Wednesdays, the zoo offers a promotion which allows visitors to buy admission tickets for half-price.

The zoo is currently working with 35 endangered species, and is one of the only zoos in the United States to participate in an Asian elephant breeding program. Additionally, it is the only zoo in the United States to contain members of all four great ape species, and one of the only zoos in the world which is home to three of the five rhino species. The rhinos on display at the zoo are the black, white, and one-horned Asian rhino.

Recently, the zoo unveiled two new exhibits for visitors to enjoy. The first is a dramatic display of Australian underwater life, such as clownfish, angelfish, brain coral, and sea apples. To help children learn more about the area, the zoo has set up the Coral Reef Play Area, which encourages education through play.

Also new to the zoo is the Texas Wild! exhibit, which highlights the wildlife found in Texas. In the 8-acre exhibit, animals such as swift foxes, bobcats, and bats are displayed with information on where each is found. Near the new exhibit is Texas Town, which features a mock saloon and jail as well as a dry goods store and restaurant.
