Fort Worth Airport

by Michelle Baugh

Fort Worth is lucky enough to have two international airports to its name. The original airport, Fort Worth Meacham International Airport, was originally built in 1925, although it didn't receive landing rights by the United States Customs Service until 50 years later, in 1975. History buffs may take interest in the fact that Meacham Field, which is located five miles north of Fort Worth's central business district, was home to the first aircraft-towed glider flight in the world.

In addition to Meacham International, Fort Worth also takes part claim of Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW). The second busiest airport in the world, Dallas-Fort Worth is the only airport in the world to contain three FAA control towers. The airport also claims the number two spot in the United States and number three in the world for size, with airport control extending over 29 square miles, or over 18,000 acres.

The Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport also prides itself on being first in several areas. For example, the first landing in the United States by a supersonic Concorde was made at Dallas-Fort Worth. It was also the first airport in the United States to offer fully automated currency exchange machines. In addition, when the Space Shuttle Atlantis landed at Dallas-Fort Worth in 1989, the airport became the first commercial one in the world to host a space shuttle.

Located 15 miles northwest of Dallas, and 18 miles northeast of Fort Worth, the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport has made attempts to stay up to date with technology for passengers. Internet access is provided in every terminal and at all gates. For business passengers, a business center called Laptop Lane provides all the essentials for business communication, such as computers, fax machines, and printers.
