Best Whey Protein

by Genevive Bjorn

With so many sources of whey protein available, which one is the best? Although not all whey protein formulations are created equal, consuming whey protein in any of the commercially available forms will provide health benefits. From this perspective, cost becomes the primary means of comparing whey protein.

The top five whey protein powders (by sales) are 100 Whey Protein, Designer Whey Protein, Nitro-Tech, Methoxy Pro and Simply Protein. Based on cost comparison analysis, 100 Whey Protein and Simply Protein are the winners with the lowest cost-per-scoop (below 40 cents) and cost-per-gram-of-protein (about two cents). Designer Whey comes in second with a slightly higher CPS at 55 cents and CPGP at three cents. Nitro-Tech and Methoxy Pro finish last with the highest CPS around a dollar and CPGP around five cents. This comparison assumes all other factors are equal, such as taste and effectiveness.

The three most expensive formulations in this comparison claim to have unique benefits, and understanding the differences is necessary for those wishing to make an informed decision. Experimenting with different formulations is also good idea to find out which one works best for you.

Designer Whey has a patented active peptide transport, which basically means the protein is supposed to reach the muscles faster and more efficiently. This leads to claims that faster protein absorption leads to greater gains in size and strength. These results are supported by small studies conducted by the manufacturer.

Methoxy Pro has two unique muscle-building compounds added to an otherwise standard product. These unique compounds are purported to increase protein synthesis and nitrogen retention, which help speed recovery and increase muscle gain and strength.

Nitro-Tech reports 97 percent whey protein isolate to justify the higher cost. The problem is that it is not 97 percent whey protein isolate, which is very expensive; rather, the isolates are 97 percent protein, not 97 percent whey protein isolate. The percentage is also based on dry weight, and packaged protein products typically have a moisture content of four to eight percent, which effectively renders Nitro-Tech 90 percent whey protein.
