Whey Protein
GNC Whey ProteinGeneral Nutrition Centers, Inc. (GNC) is one of the largest manufacturers of whey protein products. In fact, they offer over 40 varieties and flavors of whey protein. That figure does not include formulations where whey is blended with other supplements. GNC states that protein is used for "supporting your muscles and keeping your body in a positive nitrogen balance." They base this claim this off of basic protein biology: protein is required for cell growth, maintenance and repair, for the production of hormones and enzymes, and for muscle structure and growth. They recommend one scoop daily with eight ounces of water (which amounts to about 20 grams of protein per day) in the morning or after exercise. In addition to whey protein, GNC also adds other ingredients to its protein powders, some of which may be allergenic. The basic formulation of GNC whey protein consists of a proprietary protein blend, meaning its not pure whey protein isolate or concentrate, but a blend of both. They also add flavoring, fillers and salt. More expensive formulations add vitamins and performance-enhancing compounds such as creatine. Checking the label for potentially allergenic ingredients is essential as not all products are exactly the same. All whey protein products are derived from cow's milk and may contain added milk protein (casein or lactoferrin). Many contain lecithin. Nearly all contain phenylalanine. Few contain soy unless specified as a soy protein product. Nuts are noticeably absent from ingredient lists. ![]() Get all Supplements articles via
