Tarot Reading

by Grace Moore

For the average person, the notion of tarot reading summons up images of fortune telling, gypsies, crystal balls, and magic. However, tarot reading has become as commonplace as horoscopes. Tarot cards can be bought at the grocery store or read online by an expert for a fee, much like horoscopes. The cards are frequently used and abused by those that have no real knowledge or understanding of them. Often, when something mystical enters the mainstream, like tarot, it loses a little bit of its magic, leaving its powers depleted and making it a shadow of its former self.

However, there are still some that take tarot reading very seriously. They do not allow their belief in it to be diluted by frauds, expensive phone and online fees, and the fact that so many others think that it's hocus pocus. These people, who have a vested interest in tarot, keep the art and belief alive amongst the skeptics.

Many of these believers in tarot feel that tarot has been misrepresented throughout history and continues to be misunderstood today. They say that originally all playing cards were used for purposes of divination and fortune telling. They also say that while modern day playing cards have lost their magic, tarot cards have not because of the easily identifiable mystical artwork depicted on them.

It is true that tarot cards inspired today's playing cards. They still have some similarities. A deck of tarot cards is broken up into two sections. These are the Minor Arcana and the Major Arcana. The Minor Arcana is comprised of 52 cards with four suits, exactly like our modern day playing cards. The four suits of the Minor Arcana are wands, cups, pentacles, and swords. While they are not exactly the same symbols used in modern playing cards with their diamonds, spades, clubs and hearts, the similarities and coinciding use of symbolism is undeniable.

The Allure of Tarot

There are many people today that find the use of tarot relevant and useful. They are searching for guidance and direction and they find it in tarot. You only have to do a quick search online to see how popular tarot really is. While many of these sites are operated by people who believe sincerely in the art of tarot, many others are in the tarot business simply for financial gain.

Regardless of the tarot charlatans that certainly exist, thousands of Americans still believe in the power of tarot. They study tarot and use it to evaluate their lives, present and future. They find knowledge of the future useful in the execution of their present day lives.

Many tarot enthusiasts don't believe that the cards will give a definite representation of the future. They believe that a tarot reading will give you an idea of what might happen if you make certain choices. Therefore, they are not used simply as tools for divination, but as tools to help enlighten people as to how certain life choices and decisions could impact their lives in a negative or positive way.

In this light, tarot readers function in a similar way to therapists and psychologists. Therapists want their patients to understand and recognize the link between their actions and their life direction. Tarot is designed to show future events in the life of an individual based on certain actions that they are thinking about taking, or subjects that they are focused on. Therefore, tarot can be a positive outlet for someone who needs to recognize and change their mistaken ways in order to avoid certain futures.
