History Of Tarot

by Grace Moore

Historians that have studied tarot have not found enough information to declare an exact and precise history of the art. There are many differing theories about the origins of the practice and location of tarot. Some tarot scholars are also frustrated by the abundance of false information that is perpetuated regarding the tarot. They say that false rumors have taken root and been repeated so often that the history of tarot is very muddled.

Other tarot enthusiasts are not concerned about its mysterious, theory driven history. They say that often, the origins of something as magical as the tarot are quite ordinary and disappointing. They prefer to let their imaginations keep the tarot's history full of myth and mysticism.

Common myths surrounding the origin of the tarot tell us it comes from India, ancient Egypt or Arabia. However, the first tarot deck actually surfaced in 14th century Italy and France. Seventeen cards from this original deck remain. It is believed to have been painted in 1392 for Charles VI of France. Many believe that tarot was actually invented in this area, and was not brought in from abroad via the Gypsies. Gypsies actually arrived in Europe after tarot cards surfaced.

In 19th century England, there was a resurgence of interest in the tarot initiated by an occult group called the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. Arthur Edward Waite and Aleister Crowley were original members responsible for creating the modern Rider-Waite and Thoth decks. Despite this existing knowledge, the detailed origins of tarot will forever remain a mystery.
