Testosterone Gel

by Monique Krape

Men suffering from hypogonadism, a syndrome showing low levels in the male hormone testosterone, often have symptoms including a decreased sexual appetite, mood swings, a loss in bone density and lean body mass, and significant signs of fatigue. A decrease in testosterone levels can be an indicator of hypopituitarism or testicular failure.

There are several products to reverse the effects of hypogonadism. A common choice for hormone replacement therapy is testosterone gel. The gel is applied directly to the skin and is more convenient than previous procedures, such as hormone injections and skin patches. The gel is applied once a day to dry, clean skin around the upper body, upper arms, shoulders, or abdomen. Once applied, the skin needs to dry completely prior to getting dressed. It is best to avoid bathing for at least the first five or six hours after the gel is applied, but the hands need to be washed immediately and thoroughly with soap and warm water.

There are possible side effects in using testosterone gel. One of the most troubling risk factors is skin-to-skin contact. Testosterone gel is harmful to women, and especially dangerous to pregnant women. If the gel is transferred to a woman, there is a possibility that they will show signs of masculinization, such as increased body hair. In the case of pregnant women, there is a higher risk the fetus will be masculinized. Another high risk factor pertains to men with prostate disorders, cancer, or cancer of the breast. Men with these types of disease should avoid testosterone gel, and look into alternative therapies to best fit their unique needs.

A common side effect is breast enlargement, but the breasts normally return to their original state once the patient stops using the testosterone gel. There are side effects that are less common, but should be watched for if using testosterone gel. Some patients show signs of depression, decreased interest in sexual activity, sleep disorders, nervousness, hair loss, difficult urination, and body swelling.
