Testosterone Supplement

by Monique Krape

As men age, the levels of testosterone in their body's system may naturally decrease. This phenomenon is called andropause, and recent studies show that when this decline brings the testosterone below normal levels, the health of that body may be in jeopardy. It is widely recognized that some of the affects of low testosterone include loss of bone density and muscle mass, sexual dysfunction, an increase risk for heart disease, and other life-threatening disorders.

There are several products commercially available on today's hormone supplement market. Synthetic hormones are normally made from cholesterol, and in comparison to female hormone supplements, the male counterparts prove to be much more expensive. The most common products found are topical gels, creams, pills, and injections. Physicians can customize a unique hormone supplement through compounding pharmacies, further improving the supplements effectiveness in a specific relation to the patient's body.

The testosterone pellet is not very popular due to its delivery system, yet it is quite effective. The pellet is placed beneath the skin with the use of a local anesthetic and a trochar device. The pellet steadily dissolves through the subcutaneous layer of skin, and this regular pace gives the testosterone ample time to react with the body. This process occurs over an eight to 12 week period, and is done only four to six times a year.

Other forms of testosterone supplement, such as gels and creams, are applied directly to the skin. Although the application for both is convenient and quick, the need for daily dosage sets them apart from alternative products such as injections or pellets. With both creams and gels, the supplement is absorbed directly into the blood stream, allowing the circulation of blood to carry the hormone evenly through the body. This process reduces the risk of a sudden boost of testosterone, which will then in return fall below normal levels before the cycle is completed.
