Kansas City Chiefs

Asking any longtime resident of Kansas City which pro football team is the best in the land and you'll almost assuredly get the same response--the Chiefs, of course. While this may be expected from the hometown crowd, the fans of the Kansas City Chiefs have a legitimate argument. The founder of the team, Lamar Hunt, also founded the league in which they originally played, making the franchise among the oldest professional football teams in the current NFL. They are also among the most successful.

In 1960, Mr. Hunt founded the Dallas Texans football team, along with a new league. The new "American Football League" challenged the already established National Football League for the attention of the nation's pro football fan base. While most critics dismissed the upstart league as unlikely to become a real challenge to the NFL, it was a great success with fans coming out in droves to support their teams. Soon, the league became so successful that the NFL owners took notice and ultimately the two leagues merged.

Moving to Kansas City

Because Dallas already had an NFL team, the Cowboys, with a fiercely loyal fan base, it became difficult to compete for support. After a tumultuous two years in Dallas, Lamar Hunt decided to move to greener pastures in Kansas City. Upon moving to Kansas City, it became apparent that the name of the team needed an update. The Kansas City "Texans" just didn't sound right to most folks! After a fan contest, the name "Chiefs" was chosen and remains today.

Today, you can find the Chiefs playing home games at Arrowhead Stadium, which has been rated by the NFL as the loudest stadium in the league. Make sure and wear your brightest, loudest red to the game or you might stick out in the crowd. Whatever you do, leave the black and silver at home, lest you be mistaken for a fan of the hated Raiders!
