Kansas City Restaurants

by Richard Brown

Of all the many attractions and activities that draw travelers to the Kansas City area, perhaps the most important to many people is the world-class cuisine. While you can find a plethora of five-star restaurants to tempt your palate, you can also find plenty of inexpensive neighborhood joints serving up some of the best barbeque in the country. Kansas Citians pride themselves on their barbequeing prowess and they definitely know what they're doing.

Among the most popular barbeque restaurants in town is the world famous Arthur Bryant's. Located right by the Kansas City Royals ballpark, Arthur Bryant's is hugely popular with Major League players and their fans. With over 80 years in business, they must be doing something right! Professional golfer Tom Watson proclaimed that "I get withdrawal pangs if I don't eat this stuff at least once a week." While you may not be able to enjoy it that often, it should definitely be on your short list when visiting the city.

Other venerable barbeque restaurants in the city include LC's, Rosedale, Gates Bar-b-q, Haywards, Oklahoma Joe's, and Zarda. Gates, like Arthur Byrant's, has been around for years--in this case over 50. What sets aside Gates from other barbeque joints is the famous sauce. Today, thousands of bottles are sold in stores and online throughout the world.

If Barbeque Isn't Your Thing . . .

If tender, juicy barbeque ribs aren't your idea of a tasty treat, there are plenty of other options in the Kansas City area. There are many great Italian restaurants such as V's and Anthony's that serve up excellent pasta dishes. While they may not be as famous as the barbeque restaurants in town, they present a good alternative to vegetarians and those who are simply all barbequed out.
