Kansas City Church

by Richard Brown

If you are visiting Kansas City for a short time or if you are moving there permanently, you may be curious as to the options for religious worship in the city. No matter what your faith is, you will most likely be able to find a church, synagogue, temple, or mosque to suit your needs. With a diverse population of over two million people in the greater Kansas City area, there is no shortage of places for worship.

Interestingly, the Kansas City area was actually first inhabited by members of the Mormon church, who were looking for a home after being forceably expelled from New York and Ohio. The members of the church founded a small community in present-day Kansas City and flourished for a short while. Soon after arriving however, conflicts began between the members of the LDS church and southern Missourians and the Mormons continued westward to Utah.

Worshipping in Kansas City

Most individuals in Kansas City consider themselves Christian, and you will have no trouble finding a church to attend on Sunday. The most common church you'll find is likely a Methodist or Lutheran church, as they seem to be the most numerous. However, there are dozens of Catholic churches as well as churches of other denominations in the area.

There is also a Jewish community in Kansas City as well as in Overland Park, Kansas, which is located just west of downtown. The Kehilath Israel Synagogue is located here and serves the community well. In all, people from all different faiths will be able to find a place to worship in Kansas City.
