Scotland Golf Vacation

by Shirley Parker

A vacation in Scotland, with or without golf on the agenda, is unforgettable. Much of the scenery is indeed breathtaking, with garden and wild flowers blooming in often-harsh conditions, where you would least expect them to flourish. They include not just crocuses, daffodils and snowdrops in winter, but tulips, primroses and wallflowers in spring, and wild rhododendrons, broom, and roses in summer.

In open areas that include many golf courses, yellow gorse, interspersed with purplish pink heather, is its own sea of golden color. Do watch out for the spines, if you hit a ball into a gorse bush. Depending on the season in which you go, the weather in Scotland will likely range from mild to cool to downright chilly. However, that does not seem to hinder plants for long, if at all.

Few places in Scotland are more than 40 miles from the sea, and that affects the climate inland, as well as the coastal areas. In many windswept communities, meaning most of Scotland, it is either about to rain, or raining, much of the year. So, weather-wise, you will probably find a little of everything on your golf vacation.

Great Scottish Individualists

Although Scotland has its lovely warm days with puffy white clouds in the bluest of blue skies, the climate as a whole is not for sissies. Scotland has bred stouthearted individualists in all levels of society, who match the best from anywhere. Many have emigrated, taking their fierce loyalty and courage with them.

In fact, it is likely that no one is more proud of their heritage than those with Scottish ancestry. The land has also produced some wonderful writers and poets, including Sir Walter Scott, Robert Louis Stevenson, Muriel Spark, Anne Perry, J. K. Rowling, and more. Their words have reached, and are reaching, millions of people, and will affect countless generations. Many people make the trek back to Scotland, just to visit their literary roots.
