Public Relations Jobs

by Christopher Thompson

Even though public relations as a profession is primarily about publicity, there are several available specialties that one can become expert in. Five in particular have become very important over time and are widely recognized by the general public, as they are the jobs that are most visible to people. For example, labor relations became very important after the creation of unions in the United States. Prior to the labor relations position, most conflicts were handled through lawyers. That is still true today, but the labor relations specialist is the person that acts as a union liaison during times of strife and strike. They are the negotiators and the intermediaries that can help turn the tide of anger into a productive debate.

Another important position for many companies is the investor relations specialist. This is the publicist that provides disclosure of financial information to the company's investors so that investors can base their decisions on the most accurate and up-to-date information available. Then we have the issue management specialist. Issue management concerns the alignment of an organization's actions with the expectations of those with a vested interest in the company. Often the issue management specialist is the one explaining the actions of the company in terms of the views of those outside the company.

Two other specialties that are of great importance to the success of any company are crisis management and reputation management. In crisis management, the specialist is usually a forward-looking individual who can identify possible crisis areas, develop a plan to deal with each crisis, and execute that plan to lessen the impact of the crisis. Such crises could be the ousting of an executive board member or a bad earnings period. Finally, reputation management entails the recording the actions of an individual, the opinions expressed by others about those actions, the analysis of those actions, and the eventual publication of that analysis in a report that will allow people to make an informed decision on whether or not to trust the individual in question.

Apart from these specialties, there are several specific areas of public relations practices that people can consider. Such areas include public affairs, healthcare, food services, technology, and online public relations. The interchange between the specialties and the specific areas provide a wide array of possibilities for the individuals who can pursue those positions.
