Public Relations Career

by Christopher Thompson

As a career, public relations is one of the fastest growing fields in the country. Its usefulness in marketing and advertising has increased exponentially over the past few years, and companies all over the United States are seeing it for more than its publicity uses. No longer is public relations solely about changing public opinion-- it is now about changing public policy.

The great role of the publicist is to communicate and relate to the public. Accordingly, this is achieved through direct media relations. The publicist is the message writer, while the press is the messenger. If the message is clear and powerful, the public will take notice. One of the greatest peculiarities of public relations is that any message provided by one entity, yet mediated by another, reaches the people with objectivity on its heels. To this supposed objectivity, people will pay the closest of attention, as it signals change and change is always interesting.

For the professional just entering public relations, things can be tense. The general public will often view publicists as some of the most deceitful individuals in business. They are considered disingenuous, conniving, and the purveyors of falsehoods. This reputation was garnered over a century of pitchmen attempting to change the tide of public opinion for less-than-reputable men from politics and business alike. However, a true publicist is never a pitchman and never uses propaganda to change opinion.

A true publicist is a strong communicator who is articulate in speech and writing, understanding of varying types of people, and an excellent profiler who is able to insinuate himself into the thick of a conversation. His goal is to elicit interest in his clients while providing information that sits favorably with the public. At the same time, he is a representative of the public, helping the client develop a firm grasp of what the public thinks, desires, or is in need of. Public relations is an assertive, confidence-based career for people who never shy away from the public and who possess a persuasive and vocal nature.
