Yosemite Hiking

by Meghann Mason

To hike in Yosemite is to trek through nature's ultimate masterpiece. It is full of crackling brooks, stunning vistas atop jaw-dropping cliffs and wistful meadows. You can wander through sequoia filled forests, take photos at sunset of 1/2 Dome and rest near the glorious waterfalls.

There are over 100 hikes in Yosemite. They can be found in Yosemite Valley, Tolumne Meadows, Wawona, Hetch Hetchy reservoir and Glacier Point. Ninety percent of the trails can be reached by cars. You can log on to www.nps.gov to learn more about specific trails.

When hiking, safety is key. There are so many dangers that far outweigh the possibility of mountain lions and rattlesnakes. Bee stings injure and even kill more people than wild animals. Hypothermia, falling or getting lost should be high on your list of things to be aware of.

Watch out for ticks. They are a huge risk to your health, as some carry Lyme disease. If they attach themselves to you, flick them off. If they are lodged in your skin, you must see a doctor to have them removed.

Bears do live in Yosemite. You are in their home. Never get between a mother bear and her cubs. Also, don't go within 50 feet of a bear. Again, you can check out Yosemite's official website for rules and ethics regarding bears.

Always make sure you have a map and that you have studied it beforehand. Use common sense. If it will be getting dark soon, head in early. Get an accurate weather report before you leave so you will have the proper gear.

Another thing to consider is water. Imagine that the lakes, streams, and rivers carry harmful microorganisms. Either use a filter or boil your water for 10 minutes before drinking. Remember to bring plenty of water for your hike!
