Fly Fishing
Deep Sea FishingDeep-sea fish live and feed below the ocean's photic zone. Fishing for these species, such as Marlin, Grouper, Cobia, Dolphins, sharks, Halibut, Tuna, Bonita, Kingfish, and Barracuda, is a unique and physically demanding experience. In order to reach these populations, an angler must be able to have access to a seaworthy boat, and to a list of specialized fishing tools. Due to the size of these species, and to the depths in which they live, deep-sea fishing requires gear such as outriggers, harpoons, and gaffs. These items help minimize the amount of exertion placed solely upon the angler. In order to reach deep-sea fish, a boat must be available. Some anglers choose to rent a vessel. This option will normally mean that the angler is responsible for the boat, the navigation, the gear, and any other component of the excursion. In the name of convenience, another option is to charter a boat. This may be the more cost-effective choice, for many charter companies offer packages that cover the many hidden costs of this type of fishing. This may include anything from cleaning and filleting the catch, to storing it on ice until it reaches a taxidermist, and usually implies that all the necessary gear and licensing will be made available to the customer prior to departure. The results of deep-sea fishing can have an adverse effect on the natural cycles of the ocean's various habitats. Although it is not as evident in the practices of the individual angler, the impact of commercial fishing can be quite devastating to the survival of some species. Areas that are labeled as fishers can be, in effect, over fished, resulting in collapsing populations, and sometimes to near extinction in particular areas. There are fishing license permits unique to every coastal area on the map. It is best to study these, and apply for the appropriate licenses, before heading out to sea. These laws help to protect some of the endangered species and habitats proliferating the world's coastlines. It is a common practice for many deep-sea anglers to use the catch and release method for rare species, or for fish not intended for the dinner table. The released fish may be documented through measuring and photographing, and some anglers even choose to have a replica made of their catch based on these recorded proportions. ![]() Get all Fishing articles via
