Fishing Gear

by Monique Krape

A fishing rod is a long and flexible pole threaded with line and ending with a hook. The apparatus is basic, but the quality and versatility of the rod can make it a more complex tool. It is important to note that knowledge of your desired catch can make all the difference when choosing the type of gear you will need.

One aspect impacting the shift from basic to complex is how the rod handles the fishing line. Outside of the line threaded alongside the pole, the rest of it is wound around a reel found at the base. A pulley system is then employed, allowing the fish to be reeled in. With the proper gear, the reeling in of the line is not completely dependent on the strength of the angler, but on the amount of force the rod is capable of handling.

The type of rod one chooses to use should be based upon what type of fish is pursued. The fly fishing rod is thin, long, and quite flexible. The guides on this type of rod are wide in diameter, and are strategically spaced for overall control. These rods utilize relatively thick line, which is less likely to snap. The spin casting rod is normally made from graphite or fiberglass. It is light and durable, and normally used for trolling for fish in shallow waters.

There are several factors in choosing the right line. Lines all carry differences in length, weight, and material, and perhaps most importantly, in strength. The strength of the line involves how much force it can take before snapping, and thus freeing the catch. The angler has to decide between a thicker, more durable line and a more invisible one that will not be as easily detected by the fish.
