Florida Fishing

by Monique Krape

The geographical diversity of Florida produces some of the finest fishing in the United States. It is Florida's access to the Gulf Stream that produces such a variety of watery habitats, including reefs, rivers, bays, and inlets. Florida's big game fish are a major draw to the sport fisherman. These game fish include species such as swordfish, dolphin fish, sharks, and blue marlins, and provide an assortment of challenges to meet a wide array of angling skills.

The variety of environments an angler might find in Florida yield a need for different approaches in technique, and a different tackle set-up for every possible situation. Florida's local waters differ greatly in depth, temperature, and in other key components such as whether it is freshwater or saltwater. The chosen rods and reels have a major influence on what you catch, and the type of water you fish in has a major influence over what tackle you should bring.

When fishing in marine habitats, it is vital that some attention is focused on the tide. The tidal patterns play a significant role in the behaviors and characteristics of ocean fish. Remember that tides can change up to four times a day, and with each new pattern the baitfish will also change location, and cyclically the fish that prey upon this bait will follow. Another important note to consider when fishing in marine habitats is how the tide impacts navigation. By keeping on top of the tide tables, it is possible to avoid collisions or near-shore grounding.

The southwest region of Florida provides an excellent environment for backwater or backcountry fishing, perhaps a mode of fishing best suited to the more adventurous angler. The many inlets, networks of bays, mangrove islands, and tidal creeks that are pervasive in this region provide countless opportunities for unique fishing experiences.
