Ojai Spas

by Jordan Weitz

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think "spa"? Whirlpools? Seaweed and mud baths? Whether you like getting messages, facials or just lounging by the mineral pools, spas will leave you relaxed and revitalized.

For most of us, spas are an uncommon indulgence, a brief taste of the good life. But spas and baths, dating back to Roman times, have a rich and important history in European culture. Over the past century, America has finally caught on by building spas and integrating them into hotels and resorts.

As many believe Ojai Valley to be reminiscent of Provence or Tuscany, it is not surprising that the area boasts great options for the spa-centric. To truly enjoy a spa, you must allow the focus to be on you. You must appreciate your need to detoxify, cleanse and be free from outside distraction. It is your chance to focus on self-healing and reflection. Ojai provides an ideal setting for such practices.

In addition to massage and skin care services (body scrubs and facials), spas emphasize physical and emotional well-being through Tai Chi, Yoga and other creative seminars. "Kuyam" is an ancient Chumash word, which means "a place to rest together." The Chumash were the original settlers the Ojai Valley, but the practice and founding principle of kuyam is embraced by many eastern cultures that emphasize individual health and its contribution to society at large. Whether you wish to embrace the spa experience for day or a week, most offer package deals that allow access to all services for a set price.
