Career In Travel And Tourism

by Kathleen Gagne

It may surprise some people that travel and tourism positions rank among the top choices for a rewarding and lucrative career. The world is, in fact, becoming smaller, and there is no corner of it that does not experience travelers who want to taste the flavor of a place unlike home. As a result, there is a continuing and growing need for qualified persons to work in the travel industry.

While the competition for travel agent positions is expected to be tight due to the availability of online booking options, there is still a need for up to 100,000 agents working with agencies or as independents. At the same time, the number of employees in the tourism industry will continue to grow as more and more hotels and resorts are built worldwide and as more Baby Boomers retire and begin to travel more frequently. A career in the travel industry begins with the appropriate training.

Train for a Career in Travel

It never hurts to have a bachelor's degree when considering a travel-related career. Many hotel positions, especially those in management, require not only a bachelor's degree but a graduate degree as well. Working at any management level in theme parks generally requires a college degree. Becoming a travel agent does not necessarily require a degree, but it is a good idea to obtain one if possible because a degree is essential to advancement in almost any career.

A good way to find out if a career in travel and tourism is one you want to pursue is to take summer jobs when they are available. There are hundreds of options in the field, and experiencing several before making a final choice will provide the opportunity to explore and choose. It will also offer candidates valuable experience for resumes. Before making any decision, research into the specific tasks, advancement opportunities, and pay levels is a great idea.
