Travel Agent Training

by Kathleen Gagne

In order to work in the travel industry, it is important to obtain the right training. In some cases, that can mean interning with an existing travel agency and getting on-the-job experience while learning. Some agencies require a minimum of a high school diploma or an associate or bachelor's degree before they will take on a candidate.

Depending on the state in which the candidate lives, there will be licensing requirements that must be fulfilled before he or she can go into business. Today many busy people choose to obtain the necessary training through distance learning programs available online. It is up to the student to make sure the program selected meets the criteria set up by his or her state.

Continuous Training

A travel agent generally continues to learn about the job long after his initial training is completed. One of the prime ways to do this is to take advantage of the wonderful discounts available to travel professionals. These provide the opportunity for learning about the exotic places the agent will be recommending to clients. For those who will be conducting group tours, previous travel and in and knowledge of the location is virtually essential for continued success in the field.

Whether the agent prefers to work for an established agency, decides to open an independent agency, or chooses to work from home, the quality and extent of the agent's training will be a key factor in determining the agent's success. Some travel industry groups, such as the American Association of Travel Agents, offer information about the best kinds of training to get and how to go about it.
