Travel Agent Business Opportunities

by Kathleen Gagne

One of the lures of the travel business is the actual opportunity to travel. For many travel agents, taking frequent trips is a must, and it is, in fact, a vital part of learning the trade. At the same time, it is a perk that most other occupations cannot offer. Successful agents have a lot of options when it comes to choosing developing a plan that will allow them to travel to the places they would most like to visit.

The first thing to do when considering a career as a travel agent is to research the various options available in the field. It is important to find the right position. The most common choices include working with an established agency, working in the airline or hotel industry, or working as an independent. Many independents are very successful working from a home base.

Get the Required Training and Know the Regulations

Travel agent courses are available in many states and on the Internet as well. Which type of study a prospective agent chooses may be based on convenience, cost, and quality. It is important to make sure that courses being considered meet state and local requirements for professionals. Most states require travel agents to successfully complete a training program and to obtain a license.

Success in the travel field can lead professionals down a variety of paths. Talking to active agents and/or professors is a great way to learn more about the different facets of the industry and the many opportunities available. If the ultimate goal is to own a travel business, working with an existing agency can be a springboard to creating a business plan that will work for the individual.
