Travel Agent School

by Kathleen Gagne

Becoming a travel agent can result in a lifetime of wonderful adventures disguised as a career. Learning how to be a successful travel agent begins with the right training. There are hundreds of travel agent schools, some of which can be found in community college settings, others of which may be found online.

Find the Right School

Prospective travel agents should learn about state and local requirements for becoming a travel agent wherever they plan to work. Generally, completing an accredited program of study and passing a licensing test are all that is needed. When looking for a school, students can access any of several major travel associations that support the industry and offer guidance as to which schools are best suited to the student's goals.

For those who are already working and want a change, taking classes online may be the best route. As millions of students worldwide are discovering, online classes are truly convenient and often cost less than live courses. Online classes require that the student be self motivated and consistent. At the same time, some students need the discipline of actually attending classes and interacting with other students that may help them to learn better.

In addition, before beginning courses at any school, online or live classes, the student should ascertain whether completing the course will meet the criteria established by the state. A state professional licensing division is the best resource for this information. Usually a simple call to the state is sufficient to find out whether a particular program will allow the student to obtain a license.
