Laser Tooth Whitening

by Kate Satorius

Laser tooth whitening is the newest, fastest way to improve the appearance of discolored teeth. Whether your teeth are stained due to aging, genetics, or consumption of tobacco and liquids such coffee and tea, laser tooth whitening can bring about a dramatic improvement. Keep in mind, however, that while your teeth will lighten in color, any dental devices--such as veneers, crowns, and fillings--will not.

Requiring only a two-hour visit to the dentist's office, laser whitening is the best option for those who want immediate results. The procedure is a simple one: a bleaching agent is applied to your teeth and activated with laser light. The active ingredient in the bleaching solution is hydrogen peroxide (15 percent), which has been used to whiten teeth for many years.

Unlike the tray method of teeth bleaching, where patients apply a whitening solution to their teeth at home, the laser method does not require any follow-up or further maintenance. Teeth are lightened up to eight shades almost instantaneously. The one disadvantage to this may be that everyone will notice the difference right away, while at-home systems tend to whiten teeth more gradually.

Laser whitening is not harmful to teeth, but people who are prone to sensitivity may experience discomfort during and after the procedure. This feeling is caused by the hydrogen peroxide in the bleaching gel, and should pass relatively quickly. The laser method, while the most convenient and long-lasting (at 1-2 years), is also the most expensive way to whiten your teeth. Procedures typically cost between $500 and $1500.
