Irish Golf Vacations

by Jordan Weitz

Irish golf vacations are an ideal way to experience the rolling green hills that define the Irish countryside. Furthermore, for the expert golfer, with the abundance of pot bunkers, endlessly rolling fairways, and inclement weather, Irish golf vacations represent true tests of one's "golfer's IQ". There is an old expression that you may often hear when navigating the lush terrain of an Irish links: "better lucky than good." A typical Irish golf course may seem totally foreign to the average American golfer. As a result, the usual advice to hit the ball with great trajectory must be adjusted.

If you rely on your towering drives off the tee, try allowing the undulating terrain to work in your favor by hitting lower shots. Of course, an understanding of each hole prior to starting helps matters. You should not expect the sunny skies and gentle zephyrs of Florida or California to be of much assistance. Not at all. You Irish golf vacation, as is pertains to the links, must take these factors into account. Why hit the ball high when it might get caught in the swirling winds that are so characteristic of the Irish climate?

These are the types of questions that you must ask yourself as you adjust your game to the land and weather. Enjoy your Irish golf vacation, of course. But be sure to adjust your game so you don't spend your rounds in search of errant shots or stuck in pot bunkers.

As far as the array of courses is concerned, keep in mind certain fundamentals of Ireland's infrastructure. The emerald Isle is not very large, but it's not at all like traveling Florida's turnpike to get from course to course. In Ireland, one must often negotiate twists and turns, off roads, and golf courses that are not heavily marked from the road. So if you plan to play many courses on your Irish golf vacation, keep in mind that you will need adequate time and planning. If you only have a few days, it may be best to restrict your vacation to one region in particular.
