Dublin Ireland Golf

by Jordan Weitz

The city of Dublin, in many ways the country's most important cultural center, has a rich history in golf that stretches back for centuries. In 1603, following the death of the unmarried Elizabeth I, James VI of Scotland, her cousin, became heir to the English throne. In that very same year, he was crowned James I of England. One of James' closest friends, Hugh Montgomery, Laird of Braidstone, was a self-proclaimed golf addict whose love of the game was perhaps only matched by James himself.

Simultaneously, 40,000 of the newly formed Irish elite, mostly Scotch Presbyterian by birth and avid golfers by practice, settled the plantation of Ulster in 1609. The settlement laid the groundwork for the Dublin area's rich golf history; the country's first golf club was constructed just outside of the city. Both of these factors (the coronation of James V1 and the resettlement of the Scottish in Ireland) led to the proliferation of golf courses throughout the British Isles.

Golfers who travel to Dublin in search of golfing options will not be disappointed; the course selection is truly exceptional. There are in the neighborhood of 60 golf courses in the Dublin area. Furthermore, there are also many in the County of Wicklow, which is just a short drive from Dublin. The area's legendary courses include Malahide Golf Club, St. Margarets Golf Club, Druid's Glen and Portmarnock Golf Club. Famous as they are, they will be sure to test your skills. If you are new to the game, the area contains forgiving courses more suitable for beginners.

If you are a parent and want to take the kids to Ireland for a family vacation, staying in Dublin is an excellent way to make something more of your golf-centered experience. Combining your golf outings with an exploration of Dublin as a city will help to balance your love for the game with Ireland's cultural and historical attractions, giving everyone in the family a chance to explore Ireland and all its amazing offerings.
