Ireland Golf Holiday

by Jordan Weitz

There are several reasons that knowledgeable golf travelers prefer to take their holidays in Ireland as opposed to Scotland. Firstly, courses are not overrun with tourists to the extent that they often are in Scotland. Perhaps more importantly, many travelers enjoy the truly casual and laid back mentality of the Irish and how it translates to life on the golf course.

Golf was invented in Scotland, and as a result, local enthusiasts abide by the sport's modicums of etiquette. It should be noted that the Scots are wonderful hosts. But Americans used to enjoying a round of golf while wearing shorts should expect to find opposition from some Scottish golf enthusiasts who believe the sport to be a more formal endeavor. More importantly, some officials on Scottish golf courses will request that you demonstrate your proficiency by presenting an accredited record of your handicap.

An Irish golf holiday is one that can be relished in a more casual manner. The Irish have famously created a culture built on warmth, family and friendship. They have been known to eschew British refinement and manners in favor of a more informal atmosphere.

The Irish stay out late to enjoy life. This means that early morning rounds are often less popular. Golfers of all levels can enjoy a more care-free experience on an Irish golf holiday. If you hit an errant shot off the tee, do not be surprised if the assisting caddy lines up your next shot and offers a little impromptu swing advice. This kind of friendliness and openness should define your Ireland golf holiday.
