Nassau Bahamas Vacation

by Kate Satorius

If you've been fantasizing about kicking back for a few days on a pristine, white-sand beach or picturing yourself on the dance floor of a swanky nightclub in the heart of a tropical city, a vacation to Nassau might be exactly what you're looking for. The capital of the Bahamas is a multi-faceted city that allows you to indulge every side of your character, plus those of your spouse, your kids, your friends, and whoever else you happen to have in tow. From museums to scuba-diving schools, there's an activity to suit everyone's needs.

Those who like their vacations to include a little Vegas-style glitz can indulge in Nassau's two gigantic casinos, while nature-lovers will delight in bird-watching tours. History buffs will enjoy uncovering the city's intriguing past, which is closely entwined with events in both Britain and the U.S. and includes a number of notorious buccaneers. The choices for lodging, dining, and entertainment are many, with good options for everyone from luxury seekers to budget travelers.

Planning Your Trip
Compared to other exotic destinations, the capital of the Bahamas is easy to get to. Nassau is home to the country's major airport, so unless you choose to use the city as a jumping-off point to visit other islands, you won't need to deal with arranging inter-island transportation. To keep costs low, make sure to keep your eye on airfare prices and snap up discount tickets when they're offered.

The weather in the islands, as you might imagine, is close to perfect: the summer months average between 80-85°F, while the winter months are about 10 degrees cooler. Late summer and autumn months tend to be slightly rainier, as hurricane season runs from June through November. Any time is a good time to go to Nassau--but keep in mind that airfare and lodging tend to be pricier, and the town more crowded, during the peak season of mid-December through April.
