Nassau Bahamas Restaurant

by Kate Satorius

For food lovers, Nassau offers a wide array of options. Whether you're an adventurous eater seeking out local specialties or someone who just enjoys a good burger, you'll never be at a loss for things to munch on. Seafood fans will be delighted with the regional cuisine, which is naturally heavy on shellfish. Conches, famous for their large, peachy, spiral shells that seem to play back the roar of the sea, are a very popular local dish.

Other typical fare includes rock lobster, a spiny, clawless creature often broiled or mixed with greens. Fish with grits is a good choice for a mid-morning meal (and a great way to sample the catch of the day). You can also expect to find a variety of fish soups, stews, and rice dishes. If you love spicy food, you're in for a treat--Caribbean fare is known for packing a punch, and the food in Nassau is no exception.

Nassau's restaurants range in atmosphere from grab-and-go beach bars to five-star establishments. If you're looking to splurge on a romantic meal, try the Graycliff Hotel, which has been in business since 1844. The wine selection, at close to 200,000 varieties, might overwhelm even the most seasoned connoisseurs.

If you are keeping an eye on your vacation budget, don't worry--Nassau is full of tasty meals that don't cost a fortune. You'll find a number of places to grab a quick bite, so you can go back to shopping or scuba diving or lying on the beach. And while in town, don't forget to try a local cocktail or two. Most of the city's restaurants have a great selection of colorful, fruity concoctions.
