Nassau Bahamas Beaches

by Kate Satorius

Just outside of Nassau is Cable Beach, one of the most popular in the Bahamas. If you're looking for a deserted beach experience, this might not be your best bet--it's a lively, heavily-populated place that's more focused on social interaction than on solitude. As a people-watching spot, it really can't be beat--though if you plop down in an empty patch of sand, close your eyes, and slip on a pair of earphones, you just might be able to tune out the crowd.

Even if your vacation is of the peace-and-quiet variety, Cable Beach is worth a visit. It's ground zero for all things water-related, from jet-ski trips to parasailing to scuba-diving certification courses. A number of restaurants and entertainment options--including the island's casinos--are within easy walking distance.

For a more subdued experience, you might want to try South Ocean Beach, located on the opposite side of the island. About 20 minutes away from Nassau by car, it is typically less crowded than Cable Beach, although it still gets traffic from nearby resorts. South Ocean Beach is particularly beautiful, with white sand stretching for miles.

Finally, there's Western Esplanade Beach, which, while less expansive than either Cable Beach or South Ocean Beach, is located within Nassau city limits. If you're short on time in Nassau, this beach would be a good bet It has changing facilities for those on day-trips from cruise ships. Paradise Island, accessible from Nassau by bridge, has several beaches worth exploring as well, with Paradise Beach being the best.
