Things To Do In Nassau Bahamas

by Kate Satorius

Many travelers to the Bahamas, of course, want nothing more than to spend long, peaceful days reading a good book on the beach. But if you're the sort of person who gets antsy after a few hours of lying in the same place--or even if you just want to pepper your relaxing vacation with some adventure--the array of activities available in Nassau is virtually endless.

Sports in Nassau

Love water? Nassau offers sailboat rentals, jet-ski rentals, canoe and kayak rentals, parasailing, snorkeling, and deep-sea fishing. You can also choose a "powerboat adventure," during which you zoom to outlying islands in a high-speed boat, explore deserted beaches, and maybe even catch a glimpse of an endangered species of iguana. Many beachside dive shops offer lessons in scuba diving for those who aren't certified but still want to experience the Bahamas' amazing underwater coral reefs firsthand.

Landlubbers will be glad to know that Nassau also offers much in the way of dry adventure, as well. Providence Island (where Nassau is located) boasts several world-class golf courses--most notably the Cable Beach Golf Course, which is considered one of the Caribbean's best. Many of the larger hotels offer tennis courts, with some also offering squash, racquetball, and shuffleboard.

The Great Outdoors

If you're eager to explore the natural landscape, you'd do well to investigate the variety of eco-tours available on the island. Led by knowledgeable guides, these excursions give you a close look at native plants and animals. Bird watching is another popular pastime in the area around Nassau. In addition to the flamingo, the national bird of the Bahamas, you'll find 28 species that can't be found anywhere in North America or Europe.
