Punk Rock Hair

by Erwann Marshall

When it comes to punk style, the haircuts are usually the first thing to be noticed. From mohawks to spikes, shaved patterns and bright colors, punk rock hair is almost as important as the music it's inspired by. In truth, as extravagant as the hair may be, punk rock hair is deeply rooted in the origins of punk music and its cultural significance.

A Physical Representation of the Music

Punk music was born out of a need to rebel against the status quo and the growing corporate dominance of the musical landscape. Although punk has now become somewhat of a trend, in its formative years, it was an underground movement that inspired a generation of disaffected youth looking for an outlet to showcase their diffidence and disdain for conformity. What better way then to show it via their hair?

As bare bones as punk music strives to be, punk style is its physical reflection. From torn clothes to clunky boots, chains, piercings and wild hair, punk embraces and combines the ideas of originality and shock value. Originating in England for the most part, punk rock hairstyles were originally meant to draw attention, while also breaking the boundaries of the traditional social structures in the United Kingdom.

Punk rock hairdos today has lost much of its initial social message. Over the years, mohawks and dyed hair have become common and are more of a method of self-expression than anything else. What was once unconventional has become a type of conformity in its own right, as many use these haircuts as a means of being accepted into one particular group over another. Nevertheless, punk haircuts are another part of the punk movement whose effects are still visible today.
