Punk Rock Bands
Punk Rock LyricsAs easy as it is to focus on the pulsating and fast paced music, punk rock lyrics often contain deep social messages that reflect anger or frustration. In fact, punk rock was born out of dissatisfaction with political situations in the '70s and grew to become an underground, yet hugely followed movement. Bands such as The Clash stirred much discussion with songs such as "London's Burning," while the Sex Pistols reveled in controversy over their anthem of "Anarchy in the UK." Punk Rock Lyrics and their ImportanceThe key with most punk songs is that they are short and to the point. Punk rock lyrics are usually "in your face" and tell you exactly what is on the band's mind. Punk rock was in part a response to glossy progressive rock of the seventies, which is why it relied on only a few instruments, making up for its bare sound with pure emotion and aggression. The ability to play one's instruments was never the most important aspect of punk music. In fact, many bands, including the Ramones, were initially derided for their obvious lack of traditional musical talent. Nevertheless, the creativity of their punk rock lyrics, such as in the songs "Teenage Lobotomy" and "Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue" combined with their stage presence and energy, more than made up for any musical shortcomings. Depending on the type of punk music listened to, the focus of the lyrics can vary greatly. Emo, for example is an offshoot of the genre in which personal emotions are expressed. Ska-Punk, especially in recent years with bands such as No Doubt and Goldfinger usually focuses more on upbeat sounds, with lyrics that aren't as personally, socially or politically charged. With new bands coming out every year, the evolution of punk rock lyrics is far from over and will continue to attract new fans to the genre. ![]() Get all Music Industry articles via
