Web Based ApplicationsMany people probably don't realize that movies and other nifty website eye-catchers can't just be thrown onto a website and be expected to work. There has to be a program running them, which has to be run by another computer's internet browser. Like any successful operation, there is a well-defined chain of command, with the internet browser at the top and web based applications at the bottom. The most well-known web based application is JavaScript, which makes website features like playing a song possible. Like HTML, JavaScript or Java is a computer language that uses a series of commands to create these functions. Your browser runs through these commands when it opens the website. Many websites also use programs that don't use language to produce functions. These programs include Macromedia Flash, which allows users to make animated movies for websites. Animation can add flair to regular functions on your site, such as making a link to another page move and semmingly come to life when you move your cursor over it. It's a much more user-friendly program than Java and allows users to concentrate more on the art and worry less about the syntax. More recently, a movement has started to embed features into the websites instead of using web based applications to run them. Instead of waiting for your browser to run the application, the feature is running on its own. This makes for faster browsing. However, don't expect web based applications to disappear any time soon, as this new process requires new software and more labor. ![]() Get all Web Development articles via
