Network Support Services

by Kevin Jones

No matter how good you are with computers, there's a good chance you don't equal the skills of a network technician. And if you're using a network in your business, it's probably for something important, such as a database or an archive of older files. Maintenance is of the utmost importance, and you shouldn't assume that it's something you can take on yourself.

When you set up a network at your business, it will typically come with a support program. Researching your potential networks' server providers should be a top priority. Make sure that you can contact them 24 hours a day--and that they are conveniently located to your business. To save money, some companies will work with network server providers located hours away, which could make it tough to get immediate service.

Also, do what you can to avoid having to pay fees per visit from the technician. Sometimes you'll run into issues with a network that will take a few visits to fix and you'll have to pay for it, even if it's not your fault. However, you may want to take the fee option if it means the difference between a quality support program and one that is never around--or always rushed because they have too much work on their hands.

Finally, it's highly advised to dedicate one employee to be the liason between the network technician and the company. Though you might want to try it yourself, if you're a business owner, you have other things on your mind and don't need to overload yourself. Find an employee who is computer savvy, knows the lingo and could even express his or her own opinions on what they think the problem is to the technician.
