Flag Football Drills

by Kathleen Gagne

Playing any game correctly and safely requires a strong understanding of the rules that make up the game. Flag football is no different. When playing, it is important to know the rules so as to be aware of what other players are doing or will do. This understanding can improve a player's enjoyment of the game while also minimizing the chance of injury.

In many cases, coaches begin practices with warm-ups such as stretching and jogging in place. Once a player knows and understands how each piece of gear is to be used appropriately, drills become an important part of the preparation for each game. By the time a player hits the field, the player should be comfortable with all aspects of game play.

Typical Flag Football Drills

As noted above, warm-ups may include jogging and stretching as well as calisthenics exercises. Drills will normally include reviewing aspects of the game such as lining up in patterns and formations, handing off the ball, passing, and punting. The number of drills conducted during each practice depends on the age and skill level of the players involved.

As in contact football, flag football coaches may spend extra time working with key players such as quarterbacks, centers, and kickers. These players may, in fact, spend more time on drills than the rest of the team. The goal of drills in any sport is to prepare the players to confidently handle any situation that may occur during a game. The more comfortable flag football players are with strategies and drills, the more likely they will be to succeed.
